To view this site properly and access the spreadsheets and family tree charts, you will need Adobe Reader installed on your computer - use the above link to download the latest FREE version of this application. If viewing on a mobile device, the standard view works best - though some of the images may be rotated, sorry I have not been able to overcome this problem.

The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland. This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.
The Appleby Research Organisation was founded in 1991 by Peter Talbot-Ashby, to provide a forum to foster discussion and the exchange of genealogical information about the APPLEBY surname. From 1991 onwards, Peter disseminated the information gathered from members in regular printed Newsletters, which were mailed to members around the world. In 1997, the ARO website was set up which provided a message board, allowing members to participate in on-line discussions, post queries and share ideas.
In 2013, due to failing health, Peter passed on all the resource material and the management of ARO to three existing members:
Sue, in London - who was already running the Appleby DNA Project, took over the Guild of One-name Studies registration and became the Co-ordinator - with a special interest in reconstructing Appleby Trees and collection of data, as well as maintaining this website;
Peter, in Australia - who was already managing the ARO website and the online forums (as well as running Oz Gen Online, an Australian genealogical resource organisation) continued these responsibilities;
Terry, in France - who took on the role of Archivist, Newsletter Editor and management of our membership list
We all have a personal genealogical interest in the Appleby surname too - Sue's line was in Bethnal Green by the 1800s but may have originated in the Midlands; Pete's originated in the West Midlands and migrated to Australia and Terry's line is based in Scarborough (he also has a huge collection of Scarborough data held on several websites).
APPLEBYs in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand
We know that many of the visitors to this website belong to Appleby/bee lines in other parts of the world - and while we are endeavoring to add world-wide resource material to this site and to include more Appleby family trees from other countries, we know that almost all of these lines will have originated in the British Isles. There are a few overseas lines included in 'The New world' section, and I am currently collecting entries for APPLEBYs in US and Canadian censuses.
This is one of reasons why we put a high priority on our DNA Program - because this is one sure-fire way of establishing WHERE in the UK all those overseas lines may have originated. We have already had some successing in confirming links back to specific geographic regions in England for testers in overseas lines. If you belong to an overseas line of Applebys, please do share details of your Appleby tree with us and try to identify a male Appleby descendant in your line who would agree to participate in our DNA Project.
Together we hope to provide the resources to help you research your APPLEBY ancestors and hope that you will work with us so that YOUR Appleby line can be included on this website.
In this section of the website you will find the following pages:
Become a Member - membership is free and we will try to put you in touch with others researching the same Appleby line, and keep you updated with occasional mailings
Past Newsletters - early ARO Newsletters are archived on the ARO website; Newsletters covering the development of the DNA Project from 2010 - 2012 are held on this site; from 2012 onwards our New Appleby Orchard took over as a rolling online Newsletter (see link left)
