Funding our DNA project
UPDATE!!
Family Tree DNA currently have a special offer running until 25th June 2010 with the cost of yDNA tests reduced to $119
I will buy as many test kits as we can afford at this special rate, so if you would like to make a donation, please do so before 25 June.
Although the cost of DNA testing has come down over recent years, even allowing for the discounts available for members of surname projects such as ours it is still not cheap! (Currently, discounted 37 marker yDNA tests cost $149 each)
We are all amateur genealogists, without any financial backing, so our project needs to be self funding. However, it seems unfair for the cost of a test to be carried solely by the volunteer who takes the test, as we will all benefit from the information provided by the results.
If everyone who discovers some new information about their Appleby ancestors from this site makes a contribution of just £10, we can afford to offer sponsored yDNA tests to representatives from every Appleby line!
FamilyTreeDNA holds a secure General Fund specifically for our Appleby Project. If we all make a small contribution to that fund (perhaps the cost of ordering a couple of certificates), we will hopefully be able to subsidise the cost of testing for two or three males from within each of the Appleby lines we identify. You can make your contribution via PayPal in any currency, or by credit/debit card. If you prefer not to use the online payment system, you can also make a contribution by post, after printing out the payment form - however in this case you need to send a US dollar cheque.
A couple of people have emailed me about difficulties wih the instructions on Family Tree DNA's website, so to make sure that your donation goes into the Appleby General Fund, here is a step by step guide!
Go to the Appleby DNA Project page on Family Tree DNA's website.
Click on the words
'Contribute to the Surname Project General Fund'
when you click on the letter A in the left hand box, this will bring up a list of all the projects starting with A - scroll down until you reach APPLEBY and select it.
Donation Amount: Insert the amount you would like to donate - in US dollars (but leave out the dollar sign)
Donation Type: There is an option of making your donation anonymously (but if you choose this option, no-one will know who made it, not even the Project Administrators, so we will be unable to thank you!), or as an individual payment, or in honour of one of your ancestors. Or, if you wish we can try to reserve your donation to use to pay for testing a representative of your own Appleby line (however, we must be sure that there are living males in your line who would be willing to take a yDNA test).
**Whatever you decide, the details of all contributions to the General Fund AND the information about how the funds are used to pay towards specific individual's DNA tests are ONLY known by the Administrators, as we have chosen not to publish the General Fund information on the Project page.
Donor Name: If you would like us to know that you made the contribution, please insert your full name
Note: Add any instructions you wish about the use of your donation
When you click on the Pay Pal button you will be taken to a secure page where you can either log in to your Pay Pal account, or click 'continue' if you wish to pay by Credit/Debit card.
Alternatively, if you would prefer not to use online payment methods, scroll down to the bottom of the page where there is a button to print out a payment form which you can send by post directly to Family Tree DNA's Head Office. (Note: if you wish to receive confirmation that they have received your payment, remember to write in your email address!)
