My attention was first drawn to Matthew Appelbee's sons, because they kept cropping up as tin plate workers in the East End of London ... where I was hunting for my own line of Appelbys who were also in the tin plate business. After tracing these Appelbees back through census records and the London parish records, I learned that the family's origins were in Berkshire. It should be noted that they were very consistent about maintaining the spelling of their surname, and all the sons had neat well formed handwriting (which made the task much easier!) If the baptism and marriage records on family search are correct, Matthew belonged to the following family:

Joseph Appelbee was christened in Ashampstead, Berks on 11 oct 1767 - the son of Thomas Appelbee and Sarah. Joseph married Elizabeth Moyrer in 1795 Ashampstead and their children were all christened in Ashampstead or Hampstead Norris:Mary Appelbee, chr 1796 Clarissa Appelbee, chr 1797 Matthew Appelbee, chr 1799 Mark Appelbee, chr 1800James Appelbee, chr 1802 David Appelbee, chr 1804Ambros Appelbee, chr 1806Charlotte Appelbee, chr 1809Sarah Appelbee, chr 1811Sophia Appelbee, chr 1813Emma Appelbee, chr 1816

From census information and London Parish Records, it seems that Matthew and his wife Mary and their family moved to London themselves for a few years, before returning to Hampstead Norris. However, several of their children settled in the East End of London, where they were tin plate workers and tin smiths.

In the latter part of the 19th century, one branch moved on again - this time heading north to the area around Hull in Yorkshire where they were gas meter makers.

Looking at the 1841 census, it seems that there were a number of Appelbee families living in Berkshire - I also came across Applebees in Beenham Valance and Reading St Mary; Appelbys in Woolhampton; Appelbeys in Frilsham; Applebys in Wargrave, Bucklebury, St Mary, Arborfield, Beenham Valance, Hurst and Bradfield. Is there a Berkshire researcher out there who can tell us more about these families and also perhaps a bit more about Matthew's ancestors?

Please do contact me if you can provide any further information or corrections to the information provided on the chart. I shall be loading up census information within the next few weeks for all the families shown in the Family trees.
