This line begins with Thomas Appleby, a labourer of Neasham in County Durham, where the River Tees marks the border with Yorkshire. Thomas was a great-grandson of Henry Appleby of Kirkby Malzeard, Yorkshire.
Thomas' only son, also Thomas, was a florist who moved from Neasham, firstly to York, then London before (seemingly after his wife died) migrating to San Francisco where he died.
Thomas the florist's son Charles followed him to San Francisco as a nurseryman, but judging by the US census, he died a bachelor. Thomas eldest son, Thomas Henry, emigrated with his wife and children to Texas. He initially worked in Weatherford as a nurseryman and later in Dallas as an account and auditor. Thomas' other sons Edwin and William stayed in England.

In 1878, Thomas Henry kept a detailed diary of his initial stormy trip over the Atlantic to New York, then onto Weatherford via Key West.
Right: SS Erin, the ship Thomas Henry Appleby travelled to New York upon in 1878 (from Norway~Heritage.
Two of Thomas Henry's daughters were born in 1880 and 1882 in London and a family story tells how he required his wife to travel back to England to give birth each time! However, given that his diary states his wife and eldest daughter waived him off on his journey and he wrote to his wife the next day, it is clear that Thomas came back to England shortly after 1878 and didn't settle in Texas with his family until the birth of his youngest child in 1886 at Dallas.
