The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland. This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.

William Appleby married Ann Pratt at St Margaret's, Durham in 1793 and we know of the births of seven of their children:
William, b 1794, who was a brass plate worker, married Dorothy Wheldon in 1817
George, b 1797, who was a shoemaker, married Mary Tinkler in 1821
Isabella, b 1799 - she must have died before 1804
Thomas, b 1801, was a farmer in the 1841 and a cartman in 1851 - he does not seem to have married
Isabella, b 1804
Jane, b 1807
Robert, b 1809, who was a joiner, married Jane Allen in 1833, then Elizabeth some time before 1861
Although George and Robert's marriages both produced six children apiece, none of their sons seem to have had children. (But if you know of any Appleby descendants of these branches, do please get in touch!)
William and Dorothy on the other hand had a large family, most of whom lived in Gateshead where many of them worked in the iron industry, and it seems likely that there are a number of living descendants of this branch of the family.
We are indebted to Ruth for providing the initial information about this line - further details have been collected from 1841 - 1911 censuses and available online parish records.
