The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland. This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.

East Anglia Resources
So far, I have tried to locate as many parish records as possible which cover the Essex parishes where the individuals in the Family Trees included on this website were known to have lived. I found some transcripts of the parishes of Langenhoe, Fingringhoe, Layer de la Haye and Abberton in the library of the Society of Genealogists (but these mainly included marriages and burials), but to date I have not managed to visit the Essex Records Office in Chelmsford.
A major source of information for Ardleigh parish has been the SEAX website which is gradually uploading images of parish registers - initially, apart from Ardleigh which had excellent coverage, most of the registers available were for very early years, but more are being added to the collection all the time, so I am checking more parishes whenever I have some spare time (!). They also have a few Wills, and I shall be adding transcripts of these shortly. A few events have been found on the new Family Search site, which includes ONLY transcribed records. I know that Essex parishes are being transcribed by Family Search at the moment - you can help too by registering as a transcriber at the Family Search Indexing site.
I would be grateful if anyone who holds details of parish records relating to their particular Appleby line would forward me details, so that these can also be added to the spreadsheets.
Baptisms, marriages and burials
One of the major Appleby strongholds in England (at least for the last few centuries) has been Essex, and so initially this is the county that I have concentrated on. Gradually I am adding Census and BMD entries for Applebys in Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire as these become available online. From parish register entries I have found to date, it is looking as if Cambridgeshire had more Appleby families than Essex until the mid 18th century - but I have an awful lot of Essex registers to trawl through yet!
Census entries
Again, these currently cover mainly Essex, but I am gradually adding entries for Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambs and Herts as I locate families living in these counties.
All files are Excel spreadsheets in pdf format - you will need to enlarge the image using your Adobe Reader browser and scroll across and down to view all the pages (there are currently between 3 and 6 sheets for each census)
Suffolk information
Although there were far fewer Appleby families living in Suffolk, if you have ancestry in this county, you may be very interested in some of the following information:
Records and information about people who were born, lived, died and were connected to the small parish of Chillesford in East Suffolk. The website contains spreadsheets of transcriptions of parish records, plus stories, anecdotes and photos.
Shotley Parish Records website currently contains transcriptions of Baptisms from Shotley parish registers - but Burials and Marriages will be added soon.
This valuable resource is currently the ONLY place that these transcriptions exist, as the originals are in private hands. This website includes transcriptions of the records of Tunstall Baptist Church in Suffolk: they consist of the Members List, Births List and Deaths List.
