For a number of years, I have tried to locate as many parish register entries as possible in the Northern counties of Northumberland, County Durham, Yorkshire, Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire, where the individuals in the Family Trees included on this website were known to have lived. Because of the distance, almost all of my searching has to be online, and these are the sources I recommend to anyone with ancestors in the Northern counties of England:

To date, one of my major sources of information for County Durham (where there are an awful lot of Applebys!) has been the Durham Records Online website, which also includes a growing number of records from neighbouring counties, particularly Northumberland. You have the option of purchasing credits, paying just for the number of records you view, or if you use the site regularly (as I do!) you can buy an annual subscription. This site is well worth joining if you are hunting down ancestors in County Durham. Although no images of original registers are available, their transcribers go to great lengths to include every snippet of information (and they double check anomalies against other records too!) They also operate an excellent matching service which puts you in touch with anyone else who has viewed the same records as yourself.  

I also use freeREG to locate BMDs for this part of the country - their coverage for Northumberland is particularly good and their transcriptions are excellent, detailed, and best of all FREE!

In recent months, Find My Past have also added a number of parish registers for Northumberland, Durham and Yorkshire - and quite a few of these are now included in the spreadsheets below. The big advantage of these is that they include images of the actual registers, so often contain more information than would be available on a site like Family Search.  Quite a lot of Yorkshire and Lancashire parishes are also covered by Ancestry - again with linked images showing the original records (though in my view, their indexing leaves a lot to be desired). Hopefully, parish registers for Cumberland and Westmorland will soon be available.

There are still a lot of parishes where records have been trancribed from Family Search  their coverage is very extensive, but only includes baptisms and marriages and rarely provides the additional details which are available on the original registers like occupation and place of abode.  If you want to extend the availability of more parishes, you can help by registering as a transcriber at the Family Search Indexing site.

I would be grateful if anyone who holds details of additional parish records (particularly in Northumberland and Yorkshire!) relating to their particular Appleby line would forward me details, so that these can also be added to the spreadsheets.  A few very helpful members of this website have also gone through the spreadsheets identifying the records which relate to individuals in their family trees - if anyone else would like to volunteer to undertake this important task for their own family - just contact me!
