the Appleby one-name study and DNA project
the Appleby one-name study and DNA project
The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland. This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.
Welcome to the Resource area of the Appleby DNA Project website
PLEASE NOTE: if you are viewing this site on an Apple device running IOS 13, you may experience problems with page layout, over-lapping text, etc. Hopefully, Apple will resolve these issues very soon,
(Meanwhile, I suggest you switch to a PC!)
These pages are regularly updated. I try to include transcriptions of Appleby data that should be helpful to you in your own research.
how to find YOUR Appleby ancestors
Finding YOUR Appleby ancestors
There are almost 8,500 individuals hidden amongst the pages of this website! To find YOUR Appleby ancestors, first try searching in the NAME INDEX and the INDEX to Appleby Family Trees.
LINKS
Although for the past couple of years I have not had time to produce them, initially I did circulate occasional newsletters to all the people who have joined our Mailing List. Click on the image to view past emails.
A link to the latest Newsletter appears on the home page of the website.

Census and BMD records - these links are also available on the relevant regional resource page
When I started collecting these records, I concentrated on areas where there were large numbers of Applebys living - I am now adding records for more counties as records become available online.
Click on the above image to open a pdf of the new Colour Code Key I will be using to identify each line on the relevant census and BMD spreadsheets.

America and Canada - I am currently working on collecting census data for APPLEBYs found in the US Federal Censuses and available Canadian censuses. This is a slow process but I hope to post this information eventually! As far as BMD information is concerned, to date I have only identified this information for specific trees that are already on the website.
Australia and New Zealand - as with America and Canada, the trees for these countries contain as many BMD entries as I have been able to locate, with many more provided by descendants of the individual lines shown on the website. If any volunteers have access to specific collections of BMDs or Electoral registers and would be prepared to search for all APPLEBY entries in these, I should be most grateful!
Terry's Family History Data
Terry has collected a huge amount of data relating to Appleby/bees in England and Canada, which he has made available on his Google site.
The spreadsheets cover: Appleby Graves, as well as data for Canada, East Anglia, Yorks East Riding, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Nottinghamshire, Scarborough, to name but a few!
Birth, Marriage and Death certificates
Amongst the records in the original Appleby Research Library, there were a number of Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates submitted over the past twenty years. Most are for the period 1837-1950 and are for the UK, but there are some from Ireland and Australia (including many from Tasmania), and we have added many more as time goes by.
I have transcribed the Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates* and the details are now included in the Regional Census and BMD information above
Please could I ask you to send me photocopies of any BMD certificates that you hold, so that I can add them to this database?
*We had originally hoped to digitise all these Certificates and make copies available to members - however many are extremely faded (having been produced at Somerset House back in the 1960s!) so transcriptions seem to be the best option to make this valuable information more widely available - you will find them in the relevant geographical section in the Census and BMD resources above.
CAN YOU HELP?
if you can help by adding to our APPLEBY census and/or BMD data ... please read these notes on collecting Appleby data from your Local Record Office
Applebys in Military records
Click on the image to view a collection of records about Applebys who have served in the military forces, and includes some excellent research into Applebys who migrated to the New World from NE England and subsequently fought in WW1. Other periods of military history still need expanding.
Wills and Probate
There is currently a link on the Wills page to
a Master Index of all Appleby/bee wills located on a variety of websites - this now includes a Probate Calendar of English and Welsh Wills and Administrations from 1858 - 1941. I have also added details of all the wills held in the ARO Library. There are currently over 1,700 Wills and Probate entries listed on the index; probably including several for your own Appleby line! (updated Jan 2018). A growing number have already been transcribed, and if copies are held in the ARO library, you can request a copy.
There is also a guide on how to obtain copies of many of the Wills listed. If you can add details of more wills, or identify the lines for any of those already listed, please contact me.
I hope to eventually add transcriptions of wills held and also details of Applebys appearing in the Death Duty Index
Apprenticeship records - updated Dec 2020
click on the image to view a spreadsheet showing all the Appleby apprentices and Masters that I have managed to locate to date (there are 9 pages). This list is far from complete - so please do send me any extra details you can from YOUR Appleby line, and if you can confirm which line any of the apprentices or their masters belong to, please let me know.
Hearth Tax Records
Click on the image to open pdf. I was adding Applebys as more counties become available (latest update Apr 2015).
Currently the following
counties are included:
Co Durham
Essex
Kent
London/Middlesex
Surrey
Westmorland
Worcestershire
Warwickshire
all Ridings of Yorkshire
most of these records were sourced from the excellent Hearth Tax Online website, where you could discover lots more about these early records. But sadly, the website is no longer available, though according to this notice it is hoped to set up a new website in the near future, I am not sure how long we have to wait!)
UPDATE: the new website is Hearth Tax Digital - I will exploring the new site very soon!
Coming soon should be:
Lancashire
Northamptonshire
Northumberland
though there seems to have been a delay in the release of these counties
page updated 30 mar 2022
