The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland. This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.

Appleby clothiers of Leeds

Leeds has been associated with the textile industry and clothing manufacture for centuries, (see this article about Cloth Halls in Leeds). This family of Applebys seems to have originated in Gildersome and Batley in the 1700s before moving to the Armley area of Leeds at the start of the 1800s.

It is likely that there are living descendants in several branches of this line, so please do contact us if you recognise any of the individuals on the chart.
