The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland.  This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.

Barnabas Appleby of South Shields

I have traced this interesting line of Applebys mainly through the censuses - helped enormously by the fact that almost every generation had sons carrying a variation of the name Barnabus (Barnard, Bernard, Barney).

Despite Barnabus Appleby's two marriages, which produced a total of 13 children, all the descendants surviving to the latest censuses were descended from the marriage of his son Barney Appleby, a seaman, and his wife Mary Gibson.

Although the earliest two generations I have found lived in South Shields in the mid to late 1770s, they appear to have moved to Sunderland in the early 1800s, where several were blacksmiths or chainmakers.

At one point, members of this line were living in Flag Lane, alongside descendants of another Durham Appleby line (William and Margarite Appleby) but I have not managed to find any connection.

Several members of this family moved away from Sunderland - to Houghton le Spring and Newcastle - one of Barnabas's great great grandsons emigrated to Australia in 1908 and another family emigrated to Wisconsin in 1910.

It is possible that one son from Barnabus's second marriage married a South Shields girl in 1923 and then moved to London's docklands where the couple had four sons, all of whom seem to have worked in the docks.  I have included this branch on the chart, but I would be grateful to learn if my assumptions are right.
