The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland. This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.

Appleby carpenters of Hertfordshire, London and Australia

Alfred John Appleby and his first wife Avis Ann sailed to Australia in 1853 aboard the SS Ellenborough (pictured above)

We were asked to try to find out more about an Alfred Appleby, born in 1833, who was the son of a Charles who was a carpenter in London. Our contact also knew that he went to Australia where he married a Sarah Matthews, who was the sister of his first wife, in Geelong in 1860.

A bit of detective work established quite a large family of Applebys that seems to have originated in Hertfordshire but moved to south London in the 1820s where several of them were carpenters.

In addition to the numerous descendants of Alfred in Australia, it is likely that there are living descendants of his cousins who remained in south London! If you belong to this line, please do get in touch to tell us more. And if there is a direct male descendant (carrying the surname Appleby) who would be willing to take a yDNA test, we may discover more about the earliest Appleby in the line identified to date ... a John Appleby (abt 1776-1929) who was a carpenter married to an Elizabeth - the youngest child we know of for this couple was christened in Hertford in 1804 but there is no sign of a possible marriage in the Hertfordshire records.
