The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland. This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.

John Appleby trimming maker of Bethnal Green
When I first constructed this tree, it contained the family of John Appleby, a weaver/ trimming maker and his wife Ann (Pluck) who lived in Bethnal Green. Since receiving further details from no less than FIVE descendants of this line it has grown considerably. And although many of the descendants did live in Bethnal Green, they also had branches in other parts of London (Fulham, Camberwell) and in Cambridgeshire and Essex as well as in the USA.

We now know that John the trimming maker was a son of John Appleby and Susannah (Hanson), John was born in Coventry in 1774 and he died in Littleport, Cambridgeshire in 1848: in the 1841 census he is listed as a grocer.
John and Susannah had at least five children, and trees showing the descendants of three of their sons are shown on this site:
Samuel Appleby and his wife Rebecca (Pickard) - Samuel's various occupations are recorded as weaver, gold lace manufacturer, draper, grocer and he lived at various times in Bethnal Green, the City of London and Cambridgeshire. A number of Samuel's descendants remained in the grocery business
John Appleby and his wife Ann (Pluck) - John's occupations are known to have been weaver and trimming maker - although he seems to have spent most of his life in Bethnal Green, we believe that one or two of his children were born in Essex, where Ann Pluck's family lived. Some of their descendants stayed in the same trade, notably the family of Walter Appleby who had a 'tassell factory', but others followed the Pluck family trade and became bootmakers, while others were grocers, licensed victuallers and tin plate workers. Five of their sons married and had families - each of which is shown on a separate chart below.
Thomas William Appleby and his wife Phoebe (Davis) - in 1841, Thomas was a lace weaver in Bethnal Green, but around 1850 Thomas and Phoebe and two sons John and Alfred emigrated to America, settling in Wisconsin where they became farmers.
