John James Appleby was born about 1798 in Charterhouse Street - he and his first wife Elizabeth Freeman had three children, and he had a further two children with his second wife Elizabeth Day.  However, only one of his sons (John Appleby, a musical instrument maker) went on to marry and have children.  I have recently found that John James Appleby became a Freeman of the City of London in 1823 by redemption (he was admitted to the Company of Clockmakers), and his son John was apprenticed to a horn and trumpet maker in 1839.

Although the census shows that the family moved many times, they seem to have remained in the Clerkenwell/Islington area for many years.

There is clearly an interesting relationship between this Appleby family and the family of Drury Freeman, watchmaker/jeweller, which I would be most interested to learn more of, if anyone has more detailed information.

UPDATE:  In November 2012 I was contacted by Kate, who also had Drury Freeman appearing in her family tree!  Kate's family tree 'Samuel Applebee pipemaker' will be added to the website shortly.  The link between these two lines seems to be just out of reach, and as yet we have not proved a connection, though they lived alongside each other and both families were very involved with the Freeman family.
