The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland. This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.

Osmotherley Applebys
Life in this ancient village on the edge of the North Yorkshire moors, changed dramatically with the opening of Cote Ghyll linen mill in the late 19th century and its associated bleaching mills (source Osmotherley.org.uk)
John Appleby was born in nearby Knayton in about 1801, but after his marriage in 1824 to Elizabeth Barker (b.1798 in Osmotherly) the couple remained in Osmotherly and raised their family. John was a tailor, as was his eldest son George, but in later censuses they seem to have become farmers. Later generations of George’s family were coal miners at Hedley Hope in Co Durham.
I have not managed to trace John and Elizabeth’s son William and his wife Catherine Cahill and large family after 1881, and it is possible that they emigrated?
....YES, THEY DID! I have received new information about their new life in Pennsylvania ...

It seems that William and Catherine sailed on the 'Pennsylvania' in 1882 with two of their children: Teresa and William (Billy). An older daughter Elizabeth had already arrived in the USA and two more brothers Johnny and Joseph followed in about 1884 - it sounds as though they had a pretty hard life out there - with William himself dying in a mining accident in 1904 and several of his sons either dying or being severely injuried in the mines.
Ruth sent me the following Pennsylvania miners' song -

Pick! Pick! Pick!
in the tunnel's endless gloom
And every blow of our strong right arm
But helps to carve our tomb
But what is that to thee
Who live by our blood and toil?
For mining royalties must be made
To glut the coal barons' spoils"
William Appleby and his wife Catherine Cahill, with their son William (Billy) Appleby who married Alice Stockdale in 1807 in Youngstown, Fayette Co, PA
I have been sent some extracts from a family history that has been written about this family's experiences in Pennsylvania - it is called 'Appleby Family Roots and Branches' and covers the ancestors and descendants of William and Alice Stockdale Appleby.
I have added some details from these extracts to the family tree below, however, please let me know if you have any corrections to this information.
