The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland.  This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.

Thomas Appleby of Tynemouth

This small line begins with Thomas Appleby (born 1804, died between 1861 and 1866), who was a stationer born and bred in Tynemouth, Northumberland.

From the baptism records of Christ Church, Tynemouth, Thomas was either the son of Thomas Appleby, a printer and book seller and native of Northallerton, and his wife Margery, nee Rowe, of Stockton; or Thomas Appleby, a cabinet maker and native of Stokesley near Middlesbrough, and his wife Sarah, nee Reed, of Durham.

Both Thomases were born and baptised within a few months of each other.  Given the somewhat similar occupations of stationer and printer, it is likely Thomas junior's father was the first Thomas, however this has yet to be verified.  Either way, this line evidently links back to the Yorkshire area and may be connected to the other Yorkshire Applebys.

If you have any further information about this line, please get in touch via the contact form.
