The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland.  This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.

William Appleby and Ann Cranmer of Gt Braxted, Essex

All Saints Great Braxted

This church stands in a very pleasant setting in the grounds of Braxted Park. The church is basically a Norman building with some later additions. The 13th century chancel was originally apsed. The materials used to build the church include Roman bricks, which probably came from Colchester.

This interesting family is descended from William (born about 1760 in Great Braxted) and his wife Ann Cranmer.  The couple were married in 1788, and from William's will we now know that the couple had just one son (another William who married Elizabeth Sutton in 1814) and six daughters.

The earlier generations were farmers, but later became innkeepers and brewers collectors.

The family remained for several generations in the villages of Great Braxted, Tolleshunt D'Arcy, Rivenhall, Kelvedon - all to the south west of Colchester.  However, the only branch which I have managed to trace as far as the 1911 census were the family of George William Appleby and Esther Weatherhead, who raised their three sons in Tottenham, Middlesex.

Because there is an evident relationship between this line of Appleby's and the Warwicker family, I have included the children of Eliza Ann Appleby and John Wood Warwicker.  Eliza's brother William Appleby was married first to Susannah Warwicker and later to Mary Wood Warwicker, who had previously been married to Robert Bretnall.
