The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland.  This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.

William Phillip Appleby, rifleman in the London Regiment (Post Office Rifles)

William Phillip Appleby was born in Morpeth, in about 1877, the son of Thomas Appleby, an omnibus driver, and his wife Ellenor Ord.  William fought in France and Flanders in the Great War, and was killed in action at Pozieres in the Somme on 23 march 1918.  He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial.

You can read about the battle at Pozieres on this website.

We have been able to trace this line back to Thomas Appleby who married Mary Jonson in Warkworth in 1793 - it is likely that this line  is connected to the main group of lines in the Acklington cluster of DNA results.

Any further information about this line would be most welcome.
