The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland.  This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.

Wylam branch of Corbridge line of Applebys

This new Northumberland branch of the Corbridge line was recently discovered (and there is yet another branch in the pipeline!).  We have traced the Wylam branch back to Thomas Appleby, born about 1776 in Great Whittington, who married Mary Arthur of Ovingham in 1796.  This Thomas was a son of William and Catherine Charlton (mar 1763) who appear on Chart One of the Corbridge tree.

CHART TWO is VERY wide!  Please zoom in and scroll across to discover all the family groups.

Puffing_Billy_1862

Wylam is famous for being the birthplace of George Stephenson and is also associated with the steam locomotive Puffing Billy, which was developed by William Hedley in 1813.

You can read more about the history of Wylam on this website and also discover more about the Wylam Colliery on the Heddon Local History website (with some more super early photos)

The photograph of Puffing Billy was taken in 1862 just before the locomotive was handed over to the Science museum (source Wikipedia)

Many of the members of this line were coal miners - and the later censuses revealed even more Appleby families living alongside members of this line who also worked in the mine at Prudhoe!

The family member who first contacted us about this line, still lives in the locality and has a wealth of stories about his ancestors ... I am hoping to include some of them on this page in the not too distant future.  In the meantime, he has sent me the image below.  It is taken from an archived 1978 issue of the Wylam Globe and the quality is not perfect, but he tells me that as well as the three men pictured who carry the surname Appleby, others in the group are also related to the Appleby family:

If you you think this line is part of your own ancestry, you will discover a number of related census and BMD entries in the Northern Region Resource sheets.

As always, if you can contribute any further information I should be delighted to hear from you.

We have recently received a set of yDNA results from a descendant of this line, which definitely confirm the connection to the Corbridge line!

salmon netsmen from Wylam Globe
Wylam Waggonway 1788

The village of Wylam is built along the 'Wylam Waggonway' which you can read about on this interesting blog and I am told that the name 'Wylam' includes a number of villages/ hamlets (Hagg Bank, Horsley, Houghton, Close House as well as North, South and West Wylam)

the map is part of John Gibson's 1788 map

The chart for this line had become so large that I have had to divide it into two separate sections ...

CHART ONE: Descendants of Thomas Appleby and Mary Arthur

CHART TWO: Descendants of John Appleby, platelayer
