the Appleby one-name study and DNA project
The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland. This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.

Contact Page
For years, I had a Contact Form on this site that you could complete online, and it worked brilliantly. But recently, spammers have managed to work their evil way to the forwarding address, and I have been receiving reams of unpleasant spam.
Although I am no longer undertaking any new research, I would like to hear about any errors on any pages of this website.
So, if you do need to email me you MUST provide the following information:
1. Hopefully, you have been able to establish WHICH of the APPLEBY lines shown on this website you connect to, using the List of Trees on the site and/or the Name Index which are both provided on this page , where you will also find some guidance on how to search. Once you have established this information, please ensure the SUBJECT line for your email shows the name and number of this line; then in your email, explain exactly HOW you connect to one of the individuals shown on that Appleby line, and tell me any new information you have discovered or point out any errors you may have spotted.
2. If you are unable to work out which line you belong to, you will need to include the following information in your email, which should have as the SUBJECT line, the full name of your most distant known APPLEBY ancestor and WHERE and WHEN he lived.
The body of your email must include:
-
Your own name and country of residence
-
Your email address
-
along with the following details for a more recent APPLEBY ancestor in your family tree:
-
The name of an APPLEBY ANCESTOR (e.g. your grandfather),
-
dates and places of that individual's birth, death and marriage
-
the full name of his wife - with date/place, of marriage if you know this
-
any info you know about your Appleby ancestor's parents.
Please bear in mind that none of the trees on the website, or the name index, includes any individual who is alive today, or anyone who was born in the last 100 years. So, you will need to undertake your own research* into your family history in order to provide the above information for your Appleby ancestor ... The most recent census available in the British Isles was taken in 1911; in the USA there was a Federal Census in 1940. To get back that far, you may need to purchase birth, marriage and death certificates.
* You should be able to access the most useful Genealogy websites (Ancestry and Find My Past) at your local library, and you may find someone at the library to help you get started. However, please do NOT send any attachments at this stage, as this may prevent your email being forwarded to me.
4. Please understand that I am no longer able to undertake research on new APPLEBY families due to ill health and a huge backlog of existing research waiting to be completed. All I can offer to do is tell you how you connect to an existing Appleby line.
